Who Doesn’t Love Vintage Trains?
Experience the pristine backcountry of the San Juan Mountains as you travel from Durango, Colorado to historic Silverton, Colorado, aboard one of the last surviving narrow gauge railroads in America. Over 300 days each year, the steam-powered Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train departs from Durango with round-trip, full-day excursions. There are both summer and winter excursions, offering different ways to experience this railroad adventure.
The train departs from its original 1882 train depot in Durango. This is the same coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that runs along the tracks that miners, cowboys, and settlers of the Old West took over a century ago. The journey winds through breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the San Juan National Forest.
The ride between Silverton and Durango has been rated one of “The World’s Top Ten Train Rides” by the Society of American Travel Writers; given a “5-Star Award for Best Attraction” by the National Association of Travel Journalists; and named “Number One North American Train Trip” by National Geographic Traveler.
